After this weekend I will send you a trilingual abstract for my
speech. My piece deals with European thought systems in philosophy and
cybernetics. For example, France counts closed systems (Badiou's) and
open systems (Deleuze's); my intention is to approach the concept of
Fold (what a platonist heritage would synthesize as "stupeur de
l'Etre"), and the conceptual scheme of Unfolding (or what a spinozist
lignage would call "Clameur de l'Etre"). But an analog meaning is to
be unveiled in science (the dynamic systems of Jay W. Forester, the
cybernetics of Norbert Wiener). I will leave aside the question of the
pre-Socratic enigma as an anti-systemic resource, and rather go back
to the "late" ancient Greece and Sicily as remanent topoi for
contemporary European thought. A while ago, Foucault wrote about a
thought of the "outside", when Deleuze, Nietzsche and quantum physics
lead us to forge a conception of the Overfold.
A link could also be made with the origins of cybernetics as the art
of sailing and governing and the Sicilian expedition which marks the
beginning of the decline of the Athenian democracy and also of the era
of the pre-Socratics (Heraclitus, Empedocles of Agrigentum, Anaxagoras
of Clazomenae); it will also be a mean to call forth the dogmatic and
systemic scheme of the philosophical academies (through Plato,
Aristotle, Stoicism, Skepticism, etc.).
